Crowns Vs. Fillings – Which One is Right for Me?

Dental crowns and fillings are often talked about together. You might have even seen them on the same page on your dentist’s website. However, they do have their differences, and each fulfills a unique role within restoration dentistry. So how do you know which one is right for you? Keep reading to learn more.

The Scoop on Dental Crowns

As far as restorations go, dental crowns offer the most coverage. They’re essentially a cap that your dentist will place over top of your damaged tooth, and they’re designed to cover it entirely. This makes them ideal for cases of major dental damage or decay. Nowadays dental crowns can be made from tooth-colored materials, so you’ll be able to smile without worries.

Filling in The Details

Dental fillings are less comprehensive in comparison, but this is far from a disadvantage. Let’s say, for example, that your tooth’s damage is less severe. Maybe you simply need to protect a minor hole from bacteria and infection. Instead of getting dental impressions and waiting for a fitting crown to be designed, you can “fill” in the hole with tooth-colored resin. That’s a dental filling!

Which Dental Restoration do I Need?

Whether a crown or filling will better suit you and your tooth is ultimately up to your dentist. After all, they’re trained to evaluate a tooth’s damage and will be able to choose the appropriate restoration. However, these factors can give you an idea of which one is more likely to be the best solution:

  • Cracks. If your tooth is cracked, crowns are typically recommended. Since they’re a full-coverage cap, they do a good job of helping teeth stay together while also protecting them from further harm.
  • Size. The extent of your tooth’s problem is going to be huge in determining the appropriate restoration. Dental fillings work well when they can rely on your tooth’s structure to remain intact. Dental crowns are generally for teeth that would break without reinforcement.
  • Cosmetics. While the structural integrity and health of your tooth should be your number one priority, you might have some wiggle room to consider aesthetics. For example, if you’d like to conceal a deep stain, a dental crown could be worth considering for the coverage.

Knowing what to expect for your treatment is certainly comforting, and hopefully these indications have smoothed over your nerves. Always keep in mind, though, that your dentist will know whether a dental crown or filling is better for your unique situation. It’s best to rely on their recommendations. That said, they’d be happy to review the details of your treatment with you and discuss the how’s and why’s more fully. Don’t hesitate to voice any questions or concerns you might have about your dental restoration!
